Kiev - is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe (founded in V century AD), "Mother of Russian cities".
The city is considered one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, and it is not surprising: on its territory is possible to see such a unique historical monuments like the Golden Gate (XI cent.) Near and Far caves of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, which hold the remains of Anthony and Theodosius of Kiev, Ilya of Murom, Nestor the Chronicler, and other legendary historical figures, famous St. Andrew's Descent, Vladimir Hill, Podil and Khreshchatyk; Pochajna river, where Prince Vladimir baptized Kiev; Governor's House (1780); Klovskii (1752-1756) and the Mariinsky (1745-1752) palaces.
The heart of the city - is the Ensemble of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra (1051), one of the world's centers of Orthodoxy and a priceless monument of architecture, included in the UNESCO's list of treasures.
Numerous museums also attract attention: National Museum named after Shevchenko, the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life in Pirogovo, Kievo-Pechersk State Historical and Cultural Reserve, the historical and architectural monument-museum "Kiev fortress".
By number of churches and cathedrals in Kiev is unparalleled in the CIS.
Especially magnificent are complex of Sophia Monastery (XI cent.) Cyril Church (XI cent.) Vudubickiy (XI cent.) with Michael's (1070-1088) and St. George (1696-1701) Cathedral, Church of Our Savior on Berestov (1113-1125, buried here Yuri Dolgoruky), St. Vladimir's Cathedral (1862-1896), St. Andrew's Church (1747-1753), Resurrection Church (1701-1705), Nicholas (1899-1909) and Alexander (1817-1842) churches, the Church of Theodosius of the Caves (1698-1702) and Florovsky Nunnery (XV cent.). |
