Tuesday, 18 May 2010 13:07

Carpathian Mountains are considered to be the Green Pearl of Ukraine. It is one of the most popular resorts and tourist centers of the country. A beautiful mix of natural areas, forests, meadows, shepherds and humans living in harmony with nature is what makes the mountains so sttractive to tourists! An original nature of territory, beauty of its Alpine meadows and woods, rough rivers and mountain lakes, soft climate, curative mineral sources, the historical and architectural monuments can attract everyone to themselves. Thousands of tourists and people who like travels and adventures come here.

The Ukrainian Carpathians are relatively gentle peaks that rise as high as 2061 m (Mt. Hoverla). The largest resorts are located in Slavsko, Bukovel, Tysovets, and Dragobrat. Some of the smaller resorts are in Krasiya, Dolyna, Beskid, Polyana, Synevir, Yaremche, Verkhovnya, Kosiv, and Yavoriv.

Carpathian Ski Resorts

Slavsko Ski Resort
Currently the most popular of all the Carpathian ski resorts, it offers a number of good facilities to tourists. Located around Mount Trostyan (900m to 1230m in elevation) , it benefits from having a good number of ski lifts plus a wide range of ski runs for all levels of skiers- from beginners to pros.Slopes vary from 700m to a good 2000m in length. The resort is spread out over 5 mountains. If you want to ski in peace on uncrowded slopes, then the slopes on Mount Gabrovets will suit you. There is a ski lift here and the ski runs are 850m.

Bukovel Ski Resort
This very recently built resort has been based on top quality Austrian resorts. A lot of money has been poured into this particular resort and it is well worth a visit. Bukovel itself is a sign that Ukraine has been recognised as a skiing destination and the resort is increased in size every year. Numerous ski runs have been added since its construction in 2001 and since then, the resort has continued to grow in size and popularity.

Tysovets Ski Resort
Known as the ‘Undiscovered Gem’ or ‘Little Switzerland’ of the Carpathians, Tysovets resort has so far been untouched by building booms and mass tourism. A visit to the Carpathians is not complete until you have visited this incredibly picturesque resort which is often compared to a budding alpine resort. Visitors claim that even the air here is therapeutic. Since there is no transport, there is very little pollution and tourists love the calm of the resort. Due to the fact that there is currently no public transport it has an ‘end of the world’ feel to it, which adds to its charm. Tysovets is a resort for serious skiers and some of Ukraine’s best come here to train.

Dragobrat Ski Resort
Welcome to the highest, snowiest and one of the most remote resort in Ukraine. No keen skier can miss out on a visit to this amazing resort. Even if you’re not into the ‘white sport’ there is still something for everyone since the surrounding scenery is simply stunning. The wild and completely unspoilt landscape is the making of this resort and as a result is popular with hiker, walkers etc. Dragobrat is often called the most Alpine resort in the whole of Ukraine.

Walking tourism

The Carpathians are one of the main areas for sport walking-tours. The diversity of nature barriers enables to master almost all techniques of walking tourism and local orientation, to conduct training actions effectively. Here it is possible to develop different routes: from the easiest to the III level of complexity.

The Ukrainian Carpathians are the mountains of the average height, which don't reach the snow line and don't have the modern glaciers. Most of the Carpathian peaks are lower than 2000 m and only Chornohora massif has six peaks, which are higher.

Water tourism (boating and rafting)

Most of regional mountain rivers are well mastered by tourists: the Chornyi Cheremosh, Cheremosh, Bilyi Cheremoch, Prut, Stryi, Tysa rivers and rivers of its basin in Transcarpathian region - Rika, Latorytsia. During the last time the routes along such small rivers as tributaries of the Cheremosh River (Probiina, Bystrets), tributaries of the Stryi River, the Upper Prut have been also developed. It became possible due to the comparatively new type of boats - kayak. You can overcome the Carpathian rivers by kayaks, canoes, catamarans, rafts.

The best time for boating is the end of April - beginning of May during the flood when snow melting is the most intensive. First of all it concerns the Prut, Chornyi Cheremosh, Bilyi Cheremosh rivers and small tributaries suitable for boating only during some spring days.

Bicycle tourism

The bicycle tourism has its advantages in comparison with other kinds of tourism. Especially in the Carpathians the bicycle is a very convenient vehicle. For traveler it gives the possibility to overcome big distances with rather high speed, to get acquainted with the region during a short journey, to visit places of interest situated on the considerable distance from each other.

Bicycle trip is a very exciting type of active rest which gives unexpected and sometimes original, exclusive expressions. The main part of the more difficult trip is conducted in the mountain areas of the Carpathians that demands from the cyclist of good physical preparation, skills in local orientation and overcoming of nature barriers. The difficult sections of earth, field and forest roads and paths, steep mountain roads, passes, long slopes, wades and other nature barriers are typical for routes in the Carpathians.

Horse riding

The nature of the Ukrainian Carpathians and riverbanks are suitable for riding. Traveling by developed routes tourists become acquainted with different districts, way of life and culture of local people that didn't change much over the last three hundred years.

In many mountain districts you may ride as much as you want. In some areas you will be offered a special hutsul breed of horse - "Hutsulyk", the kind, quiet and friendly, low, of strong constitution it considered to be one of the best mountain breeds.

Green village tourism

The village is called the soul of Ukraine. Having visited the village you will enjoy the picturesque nature, feel its healing power, get acquainted with hospitable and kind people, and discover the national traditions and customs. You will have an opportunity to be experienced in different agricultural occupations and to taste the Ukrainian national cuisine. A village will give you a pleasant leisure and unforgettable impressions.

Green village tourism is a rest in a guesthouse instead of traditional resort centers. There were Ivan Franko, Lesia Ukrainka, Mykhailo Hrushevskyi, Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi, Vasyl Stefanyk who preferred such kind of rest.

Most of private hosts will offer you comfortable rooms with all conveniences. Their addresses you can find on the web-pages of the Union for Green Village Tourism Promotion in Ukraine, its regional branches as well as in the proposals of regional tourist organizations.
