The main factor that influenced the formation of Ukrainian culture, was the adoption of Christianity in Kievan Rus in X century.
On the one hand, it has led to the occurrence of the common European cultural space in Kievan Rus, which bore the character of borrowing accumulated in this space of values.
On the other - it has led to the close links between culture and religion, manifested in the literature in the predominance of religious genres, in architecture - in the primary focus of the efforts and talents to build the temples. However, the growing culture is working closely with folk art and traditions.

Last week before the Lent coincides with the pagan holiday of winter's end and spring meeting, which was celebrated by all the peoples of Europe in the pre-Christian period.
This holiday was called "Maslenitsa (Pancake week)" by eastern Slavs.
The rites of Pancake week, preserved in the folk tradition, nowadays are directly connected with the pagan cults of ancestors, family and tribal relations and fertility.
The names of some days of the feast indicate the family-tribal nature of Pancake week - "Teschiny vecherki (mother-in-law's evening)" (Friday), "zolovkiny posidelki (sister-in-law chat-in)" (Saturday), and the pancakes, required for Maslenitsa (a pagan sun symbol) have been the traditional memorial meal of Eastern Slavs.

On the proposal of the Member States of UNESCO, the General Conference of the organization proclaimed International Mother Language Day in November 1999, which was first celebrated on 21 February 2000 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
The history of the holiday has a tragic beginning. Date of Feb. 21 is chosen because it was on this day in 1952, when five students died who participated in the demonstration for the provision of their native Bengali language an official status in Pakistan, part of which later became the independent state of Bangladesh.
Experts estimate that from 6700 languages that currently exist, most are under the threat of extinction in the next decade. Attracting international attention to this subject - is an important step towards recognition of the need to protect cultural diversity.

A classic emblem of Valentine's Day is red roses and "Valentines card", this emblem appeared in 15 century. This invention belongs to Charles Duke of Orleans, who, struggling with boredom in prison, wrote love letters to his wife. By 16th century "valentines card" had become very popular. Nowadays, "valentines card" can be easily sent by e-mail.
Traditional concerts, beauty contests are held on Saint Valentine's Day in Ukraine. Much attention is paid to promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

Several major Russian newspaper editors have written a letter to their colleagues in Kiev and fished a visit.
To be honest, we're sick to read, hear and watch filth about each other. We wanted to change something.
The first topic of conversation was history, starting from the Battle of Poltava and ending with the Great Patriotic War.
In this conversation their offense and complexes, as well as ours were felt.
The second topic of discussion was the stereotypes.
Editor of Ukrainian newspaper "Den" Larisa Ivshina told about data-opinion polls that struck the Russians: Ukraine takes the third place in the list of enemies of Russia - after the United States and Georgia. We are also impressed.
Larissa Ivshina told that the newspaper "Den" has published letters from readers with answers to the question: "What kind of Russia we love?"
I offered to reprint the answers in the "Rossiyskaya gazeta (Russian Newspaper)" (see from 12 January) and invite Russian readers to talk on the topic "What kind of Ukraine we love?".
The page is in front of you. Frankly speaking, I'm not very pleased by answers of either Ukrainian or Russian readers.
They are saturated with resentment and misunderstanding. But the conversation must continue - with patience and a long time, without losing the desire to understand each other.
About the Holodomor (Famine-Genocide), which was in Volga region, where I come from. Even the requirement of Ukrainians from the Russians for the crime of the Soviet regime. No matter how complicated the issue is - we should talk.
Just before my trip to Kiev there were old friends from Odessa at home in the kitchen.
Husband - is Soviet military ordered to the Defense of the USSR in Odessa region to the helicopter regiment (now Ukrainian citizen, pensioner, pension - $ 100) and his wife who went after him after the gratuation from the Medical Institute (also Ukrainian citizen and a doctor with a salary of $ 130).
They have a trouble in the family, seven-year daughter Dasha has a serious disease - juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
In Moscow there is a unique experts and resources. And so we sat in the kitchen and racked our brains, how to help Dasha.
In accordance with the law, Russian doctor has no right to treat Ukrainian citizen for free, for budget money.
And if for money - one stab costs 38 thousand rubles, and the injections must be given every 2 weeks during 2 years.
I told about this story on the "open table", confident that, no matter how interesting it is for us to discuss the grievances of the past centuries, it is better to do good today.
We live nearby, we can not get away from each other, though, because we have a very close family ties. And we must help each other.
To this particular man. By particular acts.
Dasha arrives to get the next injection to Moscow on Sunday.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Reserve Officers of the Armed Forces "Megapir" Alexander Kanshin - I was shocked by his reaction - immediately responded and helped pay her 10 injections (this is a big part of treatment).
We continue to look for sponsors. If you can help, it will be the first major result of our dialogue.
And the next meeting of editors will be held in Odessa.
