Monday, 21 February 2011 15:01
Today, on February 21, International Mother Language Day is celebrated on the initiative of UNESCO.

The purpose of the International Mother Language Day, which has been celebrated since 2000, is to draw attention to support language and cultural diversity, writes UNIAN.

In total the world uses about six thousand different languages, according to the researchers of UNESCO, but half of all languages is under threat of extinction.

According to UNESCO, there are 15 languages that could disappear in Ukraine. Among them there are the Karaite, Tatar, Urumian, Ruthenian.

The reasons for the disappearance of languages according to UNESCO are wars, deportation, migration and language mixing.

In addition, modern technology also contributes to enhanced dominance of some common languages such as English.

On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, on February 21, in Lviv, more than 50 writers from different cities of Ukraine will hold a nationwide literary marathon of "mother tongue".
