"Naftogaz" calls on the opposition to make estimation on gas more carefully

Wednesday, 28 April 2010 09:19
MOSCOW, April 26. National joint stock company "Naftogaz Ukraine" is concerned about the statements of opposition politicians and a number of experts on the disadvantage of additions to the gas contracts signed with "Gazprom", according to a statement issued on Monday, the Press Service of "Naftogaz Ukraine".

"Naftogaz Ukraine" said that the preserved price of imported gas at the level of 330-340 dollars per 1,000 cubic meters, provided by a formula fixed by the contract of sale dated 19 January 2009, would have led to a significant increase in debt of the company.

In addition, it would cause an additional indebtedness of enterprises of communal power and the population to the "Naftogaz Ukraine" and its inevitable bankruptcy later this year.

Last week, during his visit to Kiev Dmitry Medvedev had agreed that Russian gas for Ukraine will be received at a discount of 30% but not more than $ 100 for a thousand cubic meter.

Discount will be applied to 30 billion cubic meters of gas this year and 40 billion - in subsequent years.

The Presidents also signed an agreement, prolonging the stay of the Black Sea Fleet in Crimea after 2017 for 25 years with the right of further renewal for another five years.

However, the agreements were harshly criticized by former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

"The country's leadership in the person of President Viktor Yanukovich and the Prime Minister Mykola Azarov with the President of the National Joint Stock Company "Naftogaz Ukraine" Eugene Bakulin worked out the most profitable of all the possible options for financial restructuring of the company.

The worst consequence of such a development would be the cessation of natural gas supply to Ukraine and Europe, as well as the release of many thousands of employees,"- said in a statement.

"Naftogaz Ukraine" said that the company is now able to give up the additional debt and is able to balance the budget for 2010. In addition, the waiver of penalties for shortage of gas will let Ukraine buy gas into line with the needs of the economy.

"Unsubstantiated statements of Ukrainian politicians and experts, in which they try to neutralize the positive effect of the signed agreements, lead only to increase of tension in society and harm the image of our country," - stated in a statement of "Naftogaz Ukraine".

"Naftogaz Ukraine" called Ukrainian politicians to make estimations of the current arrangements for the supply and transit of imported natural gas to Ukraine with the utmost care.

"Overcoming the crisis in the economy and maintaining the company's revenues from the transit of natural gas depends on its constructive position in negotiations with Russian Federation and European countries", - emphasizes the company.
