The leader of the Party of Regions and presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych issued a statement on Monday in which he accused the Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, also participating in the presidential race, in an excessively lavish New Year's meeting in Kiev.
According to opinion polls, Yanukovych and Tymoshenko are the main cchallengers for the presidency of Ukraine, presidential elections will be held January 17, 2010
"We all saw what fireworks and dances were staged by them (the authorities) on Maidan on New Year's Eve. At that time, tens of thousands of people across the country were without money, without light and heat in their homes where the elevators don't work, and many old people had to walk to their apartments.
Tymoshenko melt hundreds of thousands of dollars at that time on Maidan. And this money could be spent on helping the poor, so that, to supply the people with the most needed, that is the additional payments to the minimum pensions and wages,"- Mr. Yanukovich said, as quoted by the official website of the Party of Regions.
As reported before New Year due to complicated weather conditions, hundreds of settlements in Ukraine were without electricity, there were power failures in the capital.
"Since January 1, people must have received a minimum pension plus 150 hryvnia more (18.7 dollars). But people are paid the pension of the same amount as the previous year. That is, without an increase. This is - irresponsible and criminal", - said in a statement Yanukovych.
