The Ministry of Agrarian Policy ruled out the possibility of import of Ukrainian corn containing dioxin into Germany. According to Nikolai Prisyazhnyuk, minister of agrarian policy, in 2009 Ukraine delivered only 52,000 tons of corn to Germany via the Netherlands.
He pointed out that Ukraine would probe deep into the matter to refute accusations and defend the positions of a reliable grain exporter. Allegations about deliveries of dioxin-containing corn to Germany are seen by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy as an attempt to make Ukraine the scapegoat.
The real reason behind the case with dioxin found in feed was a test on new additives in Germany. At the same time, the German mass media alleged that the dioxin, which was found in hen’s eggs at the supermarket chain Rewe and Lidl, got into them from Ukrainian corn. Yet common sense suggests that dioxin cannot get into corn because this chemical is not used as a fertilizer in the growing of cereal plants.
