Massandra

It was founded in the first half of the XIX century and takes up about 42 hectares. There are more than 250 species of trees and shrubs here, among which, along with the most beautiful representatives of the Crimean flora, exotic plants of other localities grow.

Masandra is remarkable for its palace - the residence of Tsar Alexander III. Constructing of the palace in the style of Louis XIII in the vicinity of the church - in the name of the Beheading of John the Baptist - began in 1881, by Prince S.M. Vorontsov (designed by French architect Bouchard).

He chose for constructing the area, rich in picturesque rocks, caves and springs. After the death of Prince S. M. Vorontsov the construction of palace ensemble was continued on the project of Professor M. E. Messmacher, with the introduction of many changes in the decor of the facade, interior and layout of the park.

The palace was designed for recreation, so there are no apartments for receptions, ceremonial halls. Park area of 6 hectares and composition of the palace create a unique palace and park ensemble. For a long time it was used as a state dacha, and in 1990 was transferred to the museum association "Palaces and Parks of the Southern coast of Crimea" to restore an interior-exposure of the times of Alexander III in it.
