Novgorod-Severskiy

It is mentioned for the first time in chronicles in 1096, as the capital of Novgorod-Seversky Principality. In 1185 the local prince Igor Svyatoslavovych organized a campaign against Polovtsy, which served as the plot of the outstanding works of ancient literature "Slovo o polku Igorevom - Tale of Igor" (1187).

Novgorod-SeverskiyAfter the Mongols destroyed the city in 1239, it was transformed into a provincial town. Only after the War of the Ukrainian people (1648-1654) and the subsequent entrance of the Ukrainian lands to the Moscow state its revival began.

Novgorod-Seversky for a century was a cell city of Nezhinsky, then Starodubskiy regiments. During this period, largely preserved up to our days, architectural landmarks, the oldest of which is the Uspensky Cathedral (1671) were built.

Restored Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery is situated in a picturesque place on the high bank of the river.

In 1796, on the project D.Quarenghi the main monastery building was built - the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral. In 1782-1796  Novgorod-Seversky was the center of the major governorship of Malorossiyskaya province. Arc de Triomphe with the emblems of ten counties, built before the visit of Russia's Empress Catherine II, reminds about this. Another well-preserved architectural monument is Shopping arcade constructed in the early XIX century. In 1804 a gymnasium opened in the city, where Maximovich, K. Ushinsky, A. Mikhailov, N. Kibalchich studied in different years. Among the attractions that have appeared in Novgorod-Seversky in XX century are a very impressive monument devoted to twenty thousand citizens - victims of the Great Patriotic War and the monument to Prince Igor Svyatoslavovych.
