Vasylivka (Ukrainian: Василівка; Russian: Васильевка) is a city in Zaporizhia Oblast (province) in southern Ukraine. The city is situated on the banks of the Kakhovka Reservoir on the Dnieper River. Population is 15,592 (2001 census).
On the territory of Vasylivka in 40s of XVIII Zaporozhian Cossacks winterings have been appeared. Zaporozhian were not only guard of this land but first farmers in this area also. In 1788, the lands of such winterings were granted by empress Yekaterina II to Vasily Stepanovich Popov which was a personal secretary of prince Potyomkin. So Popov was a founder of Vasylivka which was called by his name. At 90s of XVIII in Vasylivka was built a house of landlord - Castle of Popov which is the oldest building on the territory of Vasylivski region.
In 1925, famous educator Anton Makarenko has visited Vasylivka. He wrote about his impression in chapter 16, part 2 of his novel «The Pedagogical Poem».
