Alupka is located on the Black Sea coast, its population is 8.8 ths people. Among the great number of sights of the city, Vorontsov palace is the oldest and the most visited place of interest on the southern coast of Crimea.
It was built in 1830-1837 by the architects E. Blorom and V. Gunta by request of Novoroissiysk and Bassarabian Governor-General Count M. Vorontsov.
Its asymmetric design and the unification of late Gothic and Moresque (Eastern) raise the ensemble of palace architecture in the rank of the most unusual in the territory of Ukraine.
Passing by the powerful round clock towers at the entrance we find ourselves into a long obscure crooked corridor, successfully replacing the streets of Medieval France and England for the filmmakers. He is completed with the powerful square clock towers at the foot of Potemkin's cliffs and a yard beside the northern facade of the main building.
Diabase gives some charm to this part of the palace building. This material is of volcanic origin, it is of inhomogeneous gray colour and blocks cut from diabase are laid on the lead lining, predetermined stylish variegation of the walls. The compositional center of the facade facing the sea is a magnificent portal in the form of peshtana with the significant utterance performed in Arabic script - "There is no Conqueror, except Allah.", with a wide staircase decorated with marble lions. Many works on finishing the chic interior were implemented by serves of the Count's estate in the village Moshny (now Cherkasy region), from where the lead modeller R. Fortunov came.
The Upper and Lower parks, with the total area of 40 ha., formed in the landscape and partially in the regular style, using the surface roughness and such natural elements as stone chaos. The Park (1824-1860 gg., the Gardener is K. Kebah), with over 200 varieties and forms of trees and shrubs, offers spectacular views as to the Ai-Petri mountain and the sea.
Alupka's palace as a museum was first opened in 1921, and during the Yalta Conference (1945) the British delegation, headed by Winston Churchill, was quartered. Until 1956 the palace was used as a state cottage, and then museum was reactivated.
